Despite the massive increase in science-themed public engagement activity over the past several decades, it is somewhat sobering to realize that certain audiences (specifically minority and low-income groups) remain completely unengaged by these efforts. How can we as a community move beyond just doing outreach for the sake of outreach and actually make a real impact on target audiences? Thankfully, there are examples of programs that have successfully done so. What lessons can be learned from these programs, and how can their impacts be expanded?
